FantasyCrowd.com's Fantasy 5

There's a reason why you play fantasy football, and that is to win! Listed below are my Fantasy 5 for each position in no particular order (Listen, and choose wisely)!

Quaterbacks:

1. Tom Brady - Tom and the gang fly over the pond and venture to Wembly Stadium to take on the lowly Tampa Bay Bucs where the NFL has been hosting games the past 3 seasons. There have been massive turn outs there (over 75,000 in attendance the previous two games) in England where football, well is not really football! Tom had his coming out party last week (which we noted in our "Good Plays" article last week). Tampa's defense will be no match against Brady and the "scoring machine" he brings with him. Notably, Romo and McNabb have lit up the Bucs, and Tom is coming off a record breaking week. Consider him a top QB pick this week, with potentially 350 yards passing and 3-4 TD's.

2. Peyton Manning - Probably the most consistent quarterback this season, Peyton is facing a Rams team that has lost 16 straight regular season games, while on the flip side, the Colts are going for 15 straight regular season wins. With Wayne, Clark, Collie, Garcon, Addai, and Brown clicking on all cylinders, expect Manning to again show he is the best quarterback in the game. Peyton should post 300+ yards again and 3 TD's before this game get's out of hand.

3. Philip Rivers - This side-arm slinging gunslinger hopes to rebound from lack-luster performance he had against Denver last week (only 1 TD pass, 5 sacks, and 3 fumbles..ouch!). With LT still not being LT, we suspect that Rivers once again will start pumping balls left and right. There is also rumor going around that Sproles will once again take over on third downs for the team. This bows well for Philip and the screen and flat passing game. Expect a big rebound game from Rivers this week with 300+ yards passing and 2 TDs.

4. Eli Manning - This could be the week that Eli breaks out of his funk? This kid has all the tools, but sometimes he looks a bit confused out there like a "deer in headlights." Arizona comes to town, and this is the kind of defense that Eli plays well against, especially in the short game and at home. Remember back to last week when the Saints handed the Giants a beat-down 48-27, well this game could very well happen again this week against the Card's. On the flipside, with the Giants D getting shredded by Brees last week (369 yards, 4 TD's), Warner could do the same meaning Manning will reciprocate and throw to keep up. Consider Eli a high-end QB2 with some upside!

5. Matt Schaub - Matt has been a monster, plain and simple. He started out strong, and is getting stronger and is the leading point getter in most fantasy scoring formatted leagues as of this writing. With a talented group of weapons at his disposal, why run the ball at all? He's home this week, and playing a weak 49ers pass defense that has given up about 300 yards per game the last three out of four weeks. Schaub should easily pick them apart, and again reach his average of 300 yards passing, and 2 TDs.

Runningbacks:

1. Frank Gore - He's back, he's healthy, and is primed to score big against a bad run defense (Houston).

2. Joseph Addai - Could have a monster game by default, since the Colts are playing the lowly Rams. The Rams are "gamers", but are no match for the O-Line of the Colts. Oh yeah, the Rams also traded the leading tackler (Will Witherspoon), so Addai should see an added work load of the "short stuff" once this game is over in the second quarter. Expect 120 yards total offense, 3 receptions and a TD!

3. Thomas Jones - Is it me, or does Jones look quicker this year? His explosiveness in my mind really comes down to one thing: Health. Granted, he is a grinder, but when he hits a hole and finds that seam, see ya! Oakland plays tough, and did so last year against the Jets, but New York wants to get back to the run this week, after seeing their prize quarterback heave up 5 picks, both Cotchery and Edwards still hobbling, don’t be surprised if Jones and Washington carry the ball 35-40 times this week! Give Jones two more TD's this week and him hitting the century mark in yardage.

4. Deangelo Williams - Has Deangelo showed us again that he is a true double threat to catch and run over the last few weeks like he was last year? Man, give this guy the ball and have fun watching this week. With Buffalo's anemic offense and loss of defensive personnel, could the Carolina run show of Williams/Stewart continue there torrid pace? Yes, I think so, especially since the Jet's Jones/Washington tandem rolled them for over 300 yards rushing last week. He could have another 150/2TD performance this week!

5. Steve Slaton - The kid has heated up, and Schaub is rubbing off and the early season run blocking issues have finally cleared up (Heck even Chris Brown is getting into the action)! Ok, seriously, when the going is good, you have to take advantage of it, and there will be no shortage of balls flying around Houston this week, and if your league is a PPR league, he is a MUST RB1 start this week!

Wide Receivers:
1. Randy Moss - See Tom Brady (above). Money Matchup! Strong WR1 going forward!

2. Reggie Wayne - Who needs Marvin Harrison and Anthony Gonzalez?!?! Wayne simply doesn’t need them…and what for, he has Peyton Manning! Look, Reggie will always have strong WR1 considerations from week to week, and he is a must start in all league formats. The only thing that has been missing from his repertoire this year has been the long ball, but he is still well on his way to get at least 75+ receptions, and 1000 yards for the 6th straight year! This may be the week for a long 60+ yard pass caught by Wayne. This game could be over early, but Wayne should have a monster game with 8 catches, and 140 yds and 2 TDs.

3. Vincent Jackson - A down week against the Bronco's, although VJAX did manage a short TD. Denver simply locked down and doubled him with the safety on most passing plays, suppressing the deep pass. KC has struggled against the pass due to some injuries, so look for Jackson to step and catch at least one deep pass this week. Could easily have 100+ yards receiving, as the San Diego run game just hasn’t got going. The second half of last year is when the "Vince and Philip Air Show" took off, and although this game should pose some interesting matchups on the field, we see no reason why the Chargers cant put up 30 + points on the board against KC, and Vincent Jackson will have a big role in getter there!

4. Andre Johnson - Andre's numbers are simply impressive. Since coming back from a bothersome knee in late 2007, you could say he has been the #1 Wide Receiver in the NFL, and it won't stop this week at home against the 49ers. In 2009, he ranks 2nd in receiving yards, 4th in receptions, and 2nd in TD's. That's good company, and he is on target to possibly surpass those 2008 numbers!

5. Steve Breaston - Surprise! Anquan Boldin still hasn’t practiced this week, and is in doubt to play. When Breaston is "forced" into the #2 WR role, he is clutch and has come through in a huge way. He is just freaky dangerous! Steve is currently averaging 80 receiving yds/gm. If Boldin is out, Steve easily tops the 100 yard mark and a score for you!

Tight Ends:
1. Dallas Clark - Dallas is basically a WR in a Tight End's body. He's fast, a great route runner, and gets behind linebackers without breaking a sweet. He is Peyton Manning's #1 target this year, and you know what that equates to…yep, 7-8 receptions, 80+ yds, and a TD.

2. Owen Daniels - Short yardage specialist for a prolific passing attack (HOU), Daniels is fast enough to gain extra yardage after the catch (he averages 11.7ypc in 2009), and typically does. With 15 receptions, 172 yards, and 2 TD's, he's been a top 3 TE the past two weeks.

3. Antonio Gates - Gates could be the #1 TE this week. KC doesn’t have particularly fast Linebackers, and Gates could pose all sorts of problems, especially if they attempt to blitz Rivers. He hasn’t caught less than 5 passes in a game this year, and no game under 64 yards receiving, with 124 yards his high at Pittsburgh. Expect him to get 7-8 catches, and around 100 yards receiving with a possible TD.

4. Tony Gonzalez - Maybe the best tight end ever to play, Tony scored once again last week against the Bears. Look, the Atlanta offensive line hasn’t given up a sack in 4 games, and the Falcons are on the road against once of this years worst pressurizing defenses in the league: Dallas. Tony will score again this week, as long as the O-Line can protect Matt Ryan. Note: Jerious Norwood is out this week, so look for Matt Ryan to especially air it out this week as well.

5. Vernon Davis - A bye week is exactly what the doctor ordered for the 49ers. Look for Hill, Davis and Gore to work the field the most, and play consistent short-game ball. A viable TE2, and always has the potential to take a catch to the house. This guy is fast, and has loads of talent…just needs the ball.

Kickers:
1. John Casey - Great matchup this week, and should score some points against a lower tier Buffalo defense. If you need a kicker, go get him!

2. Stephen Gotkowski - The highest scoring kicker since 2007, if you got Stephen, you drafted him. A very nice play this week in England!

3. Matt Stover - Taking over for the injured Adam Vinietari, Matt should have a nice week and continue to tack on short field goals and extra points throughout the year. Could be a nice FA pickup, and he kicks in a dome!

4. Kris Brown - Kris is nursing a ankle injury, but it doesn’t appear to be serious and he has been practicing all week. Consider him to be a low-end K1 this week. Plenty of scoring in Houston this weekend!

5. Lawrence Tynes - Could be a shootout in the MeadowLands this weekend. This applies nicely to Tynes healthy foot, expect 7-10 points from him.

Defense:
1. NY Jets - This game on paper looks like the big bully in school picking on the skinny kid in the corner. Yes, and it shall be just like it! Big up's for the Jet's D this week! Sacks 'O Plenty!

2. Indianapolis Colts - Bob Sanders is back in action, although the Indy D may not see much! Should be a dominate performance at home this week against the Rams, who have been playing ok the last few weeks, but are due for a let-down week. This is it!

3. Green Bay Packers: While the Packers offense makes the Green machine go, their defense has been stepping up and producing some decent fantasy numbers. Could be a really good week as they can stack nine in the box and tell Jamal Lewis to "get through this!" Turnovers, sacks, and a lack of Cleveland production will abound, trust me.

4. Carolina Panthers - A week 7 matchup made in heaven! Carolina runs, and Buffalo cant stop the run! Can you say, blowout!?!?

5. Philadelphia Eagles - Tough D playing at home, vs. a team (Washington) that will have their plays called by Sherm Lewis, who was retired and playing ping-pong last week. Enough said!

An Interview with Greg Brosh, at FantasyFootball.com

Dennis Robinson: Greg, thanks for being aboard with us today, we sure do appreciate you taking your time for this interview. Ok, so we see you're a pretty young guy, so tell us when and how you got started with Fantasy Football, and working with Craig Davis at FantasyFootball.com...

Greg Brosh: I had started getting involved in working with fantasy sports in 2006 when I had worked with a couple smaller fantasy sites. The story is actually rather funny on how I got started working with Craig. I looked at their fantasy magazine and thought the cover was "ok", but could have been better. So I had asked Craig if I could possibly do a cover for them and I ended up doing the whole magazine in 2007. He hired me on to cover player news after that and the rest is history.

Dennis Robinson: Greg, you may be young in years but we've heard (and seen) you have loads of talent when predicting player rankings, and writing some killer articles. In you mind, what does it take to be a winner playing fantasy football for the first time?

Greg Brosh: Don't go by one source for your information. I have seen owners by a magazine that is basically out-of-date as soon as it hit the stands and he/she uses that resource alone. It just doesn't work. Also, keep track of team changes throughout the offseason. New coaches, players on new teams, etc. All of these have a huge bearing on the fantasy value of a player. Ranking players by previous year's stats isn't the way to go either.

Dennis Robinson: Hey Greg, tell our reader's who your top 12 picks would be in a PPR draft this year, and a quick comment on each?

Greg Brosh:

1. Adrian Peterson - Yeah yeah. I know he doesn't catch passes. But his talent alone makes him worthy of the No. 1 pick in PPR and non-PPR.
2. Matt Forte - I think his touches will be cut down a bit, but the acquisition of QB Jay Cutler will defintely help Forte keep a nice, steady stat count. I still expect the Bears to have that run-first mentality.
3. Maurice Jones-Drew - If this wasn't a PPR league, I would probably rank MJD much lower. But with the news that the Jaguars are lining MJD up as a receiver in practice, he should be a PPR machine.
4. Michael Turner - Like ADP, Turner doesn't really catch a lot of passes, but he is such a huge part of the offense that I think his rushing numbers will make up for it.
5. Steven Jackson - The new coaching staff wants to run, run, run. And with Jackson the new centerpiece, I can see him having a nice bounce-back year. Staying healthy is his big question mark.
6. DeAngelo Williams - It seem RB Jonathon Stewart is still dealing with the injury bug, so the team may limit him during the season. Even if they give him more touches, Williams' ability to break off 60-yard runs at any time is just too good to pass up.
7. Chris Johnson - I might end up ranking CJ a bit lower after watching a leaner RB LenDale White play against the Bills on Sunday night, but I won't knock him out of the top-10. He will still be a bigger part of the running and passing game this year.
8. Frank Gore - FantasyFootball.com was probably one of the only sites that ranking Gore fairly high last year, despite OC Mike Martz being in the fold. With the quarterback position still a question mark, look for the offense to run the ball more.
9. LaDainian Tomlinson - In most mocks, I have never seen LT go in the same spot twice. I have seen him as high as 3-4 and as low as a high second-round pick. Which is blasphemy. If you can land LT this far down, you may have gotten a steal. He says he is completely healthy and the team has said they won't alter LT's workload in any way. That's good enough for me.
10. Brian Westbrook - With a history of injuries and missed games, Westbrook likely won't crack the top-3 again. The team loves rookie RB LeSean McCoy and will limit Westy as much as possible to keep him fresh.
11. Larry Fitzgerald - I usually never take receivers in the first round of any draft because they are a dime a dozen, but Fitz deserves the nod here. The offense should remain the same, despite OC Todd Haley taking the head coaching job in Kansas City. And with QB Kurt Warner and WR Anquan Boldin back, Fitz should see a ton of targets.
12. Drew Brees - Let's just say this first round is for a league that scores six points per passing touchdown. How can you not pass on Brees here? Even with WR Marques Colston injured at the beginning of 2008, Brees still packed a punch, having come ever so close to beating Dolphins QB Dan Marino's single-season passing record. At the 12 spot, if you can take Brees and then a running back like Steve Slaton, that's a solid start to your squad.

Dennis Robinson: Greg, speaking of top picks, what do you see our "home town" player in Calvin "Megatron" Johnson, WR of the Detroit Lions doing this year?

Greg Brosh: He should be huge simply by default. No one sticks out as the No. 2 guy, so I see "Megatron" putting up huge numbers with whichever quarterback is starting.

Dennis Robinson: How about the Lions team in general? How do you see them coming out under new head coach Jim Schwartz this year?

Greg Brosh: Can't get any worse than last year right? I see the team going up a bit. RB Kevin Smith should be better and the drafting of TE Brandon Pettigrew will take some pressure off Johnson. It will be interesting to see if QB Matthew Stafford actually beats out QB Daunte Culpepper for the starting job. I would rather see C-Pep because of his knowledge of the offense. But I hate to say that I only see this as a 5-6 win team. And that's being generous.

Dennis Robinson: Greg, who are you predicting to make it to the SuperBowl, why, and what will be the outcome? Fantasycrowd.com has the Patriot beating the Eagles by 14 points.

Greg Brosh: As an Eagles homer, I would love to say the birds. But I just don't see it. For some reason they just don't have "it" when it comes to being champions. Of course, they could get there simply for the fact that the NFC is still weaker than the AFC. But if I had to put money on it, I would still have to go with Arizona. Their defense should get better and their offense is still, I think, the best in the NFC. If rookie RB Beanie Wells can stay healthy for the whole season, the skies the limit.

Dennis Robinson: Greg, ok let's talk receivers, and there are some good rookies coming out this year. Who will be your surprise veteran receiver and who will be your surprise rookie receiver this year and why?

Greg Brosh:

Buthe actually arrived to offseason workouts on time, which shows he really wants to forget about his woeful 2008. QB Carson Palmer is getting better in practice and there are enough weapons in the passing game to take pressure off. Look for a bounce-back season.

As for a surprise rookie, keep an eye on Jaguars WR Jarett Dillard. He is a bit on the small size (5/11, 185), but he has great hands, is a great route runner and has a nice leap. He will be the backup at the start of the season and play in the slot in three-receiver sets, but he has been having an amazing training camp and should be someone to stash away in dynasty and keeper leagues. Plus, he is only an injury away from cracking the starting lineup in 2009.

Our "Draft Predictor" software, which has been an amazing tool the past couple years is also free. Our radio show, "Two Feet in Bounds," will be having it's first show of the year on August 11 and will run throughout the season every Tuesday from 11am-1pm EST, Fridays from 1pm-2pm EST and our Sunday morning show, which is now free, will be running every Sunday from 11am-1pm EST. Just visit http://www.blogtalkradio.com/search/two-feet-in-bounds/ and check us out. On top of all that, owners can join one of our fantasy leagues for a payment as low as $20. We will also be having other money contests that will be running all season. So check us out.

Week 7: "The Bye Week Blues"

Well, here it is…week 7 already! We all have tasted the unsavory, and bitter taste of the last two bye weeks with some great fantasy players having to be benched during those last couple games, but for week 7, this just makes my stomach ache! As I am pondering what to do this fantasy week, I see that there are some powerhouses that will be "riding the pine" again in some of my week 7 lineups. Ugh! This is where my "bye week"blues kick in! But remember, anytime you get sick, there is always an antedote and a cure for those blues! Anyways, here are the teams and some of their noted players that will be on byes for week 7:

Offense
Baltimore (Flacco, Rice, McGahee, Mason, Clayton, Heap)
Denver (Moreno, Orton, Buckhalter, Royal, Marshall, Scheffler)
Jaguars (Sims-Walker, Jones-Drew, Garrard, Lewis)
Lions (Stafford, Culpepper, Johnson, Smith)
Seattle (Hasselbeck, Houshmandzadeh, Jones, Burleson, Carlson)
Titans (Johnson, Collins, Britt, Gage, Scaife)

And let's not forget some of you who are in IDP leagues (Lewis, Williams, Durant, Tulloch, Dummervil, and more)!

So, from the afore mentioned list, lets say you have Flacco, Chris Johnson, and Mike Sims-Walker on your team and you are scouring your team's bench and waiver wire. You my friend are already against the clock, but do not fret, you are working and getting you game plan together, and it is only mid-week, so it seems that you are ahead of the game so to speak. Ok, so you see Kevin Walter and Matt Cassel on your bench (who are considered decent bye week fill-ins for this particular NFL game week. But, you have Chester Taylor and Michael Bush as backup running backs on your bench (two plays I would not suggest for this week), and you are now working the wire seeing who is predicted to get the most points for the leftovers that are out there. Here are a few pickups that I would suggest or keeping in mind going forward into the upcoming weeks to bolster up your weak bench:

RB - L. Maroney (Sammy Morris, a walking-injury bomb every time he touches the field is again hurt, and Maroney filled in nicely with a 100+ yard effort last week in the snow. This week, he matches up with St. Louis…go get him now)!!

RB - J. Fargas (Will take over as the starting RB in Oakland. Not saying a lot here, but he will get the majority of the carries this week, as he showed with a 23/87 performance last week). Keep in mind that DMAC will be back in a few weeks, but while he started, his anemic play could keep Fargas as the clear cut choice when it comes to consistency, and that is exactly what they need in Oakland.

RB - J. Forsett (Deep Sleeper, and may pose a big-time threat to J. Jones as he has averaged a mere 2.3 ypc in the last 4 games)

RB - A. Green (Who? He is back in the league? Yep, but not much fantasy value yet, but has now been signed with Green Bay, and is said to have taken over 3rd down duties from Brandon Jackson who fumbled and struggled last week upon his return).

Additionally, just because you were bitten by the "Bye Week" Bug doesn’t mean your opponent hasn’t too! Check out his lineup and make adjustments accordingly. If he has Schaub as his starting QB, then it seems that you would want to start Walter to off-set some of those points he will be getting. Plan accordingly, and out-smart your opponent anyway you can to benefit your team! Use all the benefits of checking the waiver wire daily (I just picked up L. Maroney in a 12 team league, and I do indeed have Chris Johnson on a bye), injury reports, start/sits, and by all means, do not be against trades at this point in time. Get what you can out of your players, and check matchups every week. Some good players that are high right now and you can maximize your trade might be: Jamal Lewis, Clinton Portis, David Garrard, Donovan McNabb, Eddie Royal, Bernard Berrian, Johnny Knox, Santana Moss, Zach Miller (OAK) and Marion Barber. Divisional rivalries are set to come into play throughout the next month, be prepared as these are notoriously sub-par fantasy weeks for certain players and positions!

Players you may want to hold onto for a few more weeks are: Kevin Smith, Greg Olsen, Thomas Jones, Cedric Benson, Sidney Rice, Jericho Cotchery, Mile Austin, Marshawn Lynch and Ricky Williams.

Minor studs that should continue to do well throughout the season and should not be considered as trade bait are: Correll Buckhalter, Leon Washington, Mike Bell, Jonathan Stewart, Tashard Choice, Laurence Maroney, Andre Caldwell, Nate Burleson, Brent Celek and Mario Manningham.

You see, sometimes what you are looking for is right in front of you, and that is a viable option, whether it be a waiver wire pickup, a trade, or simply plugging in one of these "minor" studs as a necessary bye week fill-in. Like my retired dad working and digging in those old river beds out in the Arizona dessert for gold, you too can find these little nuggets, but you'll have to work for it. Good luck out there!
